A First Snow

As I sit here tonight, I look out on Boone and the University, covered in a blanket of white. It has been snowing off and on since Saturday evening, and it is absolutely beautiful. Many have been outside enjoying the snow. Sledding, slipping, sliding, and frolicking in the snow have been regular activities the past few days, and it makes me wonder...

What is it about snow? What about it stirs the playful spirit of youth and rekindles a youthful spirit in many adults. What about its sight causes a smile to spread across many faces yet at the same time can create scowls in on others?

Perhaps it is the duality of snow. The absolute beauty and wonder, knowing that each one is individual and unique, while at the same time can be a deadly force of nature that claims lives. Maybe it is this flirtation with danger that excites us, that causes a rejuvenation of the spirit. Perhaps others find solace in the peace of snow. That gentle and natural quiet that occurs during a snowfall. I'm not sure quite what it is, but it never fails to amaze me.

I prepare to lay down tonight, planning to rest in a snowy university town. I will hear the occasional passing of a car outside my window, the ever familiar sound of a gust of wind, and all the creaks and groans the wood of my apartment makes as it settles in against the cold. However, tonight..there's another sound I'll be listening for. One that may only be heard in my dreams. Tonight..I'll be listening for the snow, whether it be outside my window, or deep in my soul.

May God keep you, this and every snowy night.

"The first fall of snow is not only an event, it is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another quite different, and if this is not enchantment then where is it to be found? " ~J.B. Priestley

"A lot of people like snow. I find it to be an unnecessary freezing of water." ~Carl Reiner
